- What is the difference between limewash, Roman clay and Venetian plaster?
- Limewash is slaked lime and pigment — soft, highly breathable, with cloudy movement, and it needs a mineral substrate to bond to. Roman clay is a fine trowelled plaster, more durable and more controlled. Venetian plaster is lime putty with marble dust, burnished through many layers to a polished, stone-like finish, and it is the most labour-intensive of the three.
- Can decorative finishes go in a bathroom?
- Mineral plasters can, with the right sealer. Limewash generally should not — it cannot be scrubbed and it marks. Ask specifically how a finish is cleaned and how it is repaired before committing a wet area to it.
- How do I know the finish will look right?
- Ask for a sample board of at least a square metre, made by the person who will do your wall, and look at it on the actual wall in the actual light. These finishes vary enormously with the applicator's hand, and a small chip tells you almost nothing.
