- Should I oil, stain or paint my deck?
- Oil or stain on a horizontal Perth deck, never paint. Paint forms a film that fails from below at every board joint and fixing, and once it peels you own a full strip-back. Oil wears thin gracefully and recoats without sanding. Save paint for the balustrade and posts, which shed water.
- Can a grey, weathered jarrah deck be brought back?
- Almost always. Greying is UV breaking down lignin in roughly the top half-millimetre — the colour underneath is intact. A deck cleaner and an oxalic brightener lift the grey chemically, without sanding. Sanding is for splintering and furring, not for colour.
- How often does a deck need re-oiling in Perth?
- Annually on a full-sun deck, sometimes twice a year. It is a small job done regularly rather than a large one done rarely, and it is the reason oiled decks never reach the state where they need stripping.
