- Why does paint keep peeling off our metal gates and garage door?
- Because metal gives paint nothing to grip unless a key is created. Adhesion on metal comes from abrading the entire surface and using a primer formulated for that specific metal — etch primer on bare galvanising, adhesion primer on powder coat and sound Colorbond. Coating a smooth, chalked or rusty surface fails within a season or two.
- Can you paint over rust?
- No. Rust must be taken back to bright metal and primed with an inhibitive primer straight away, before flash rust forms. Painting over rust hides it while it continues to expand underneath and lift the coating. Near the coast this is the single most common cause of premature failure.
- What coatings do you use on concrete floors?
- It depends on the traffic and what is spilled on it. Garage and workshop floors generally take an epoxy or polyurethane system over a mechanically prepared and moisture-tested slab. Moisture testing matters — a slab still releasing water will lift any film coating regardless of how well it was applied.
