- How long should new render cure before painting?
- Around 28 days for cement render, longer in cool or damp conditions. Cement render is alkaline while it cures, and coating it too early causes the binder in the paint to break down — a soft, patchy or discoloured finish. Where you cannot wait, an alkali-resistant sealer made for green render is the answer, not an ordinary primer.
- Do cracks in render need fixing before painting?
- It depends on the crack. Fine hairline map cracking is shrinkage in the render itself and is exactly what a high-build flexible membrane is for. Straight cracks following mortar joints, or diagonal cracks from window corners, indicate movement behind the render and need investigating first — coating them just hides them for a season.
- What is drummy render and why does it matter?
- Render that has debonded from the brickwork behind it. Tap the wall with a screwdriver handle — a hollow sound means it has let go. It must be cut out and patched before painting, because the coating will be intact while the material it sits on is no longer attached to the house.
